# Turn on two-factor authentication

> Protect your HostCloud account with a one-time code at login.

Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds a second step to login: after your password, you enter a code from an app on your phone. It's the best way to stop someone who has your password from getting into your account.

## Before you start

Install an authenticator app such as Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator or Authy.

**1. Open security settings**

Click the account menu (your name, top-right) and choose **Security Settings**.

**2. Enable 2FA**

Under Two-Factor Authentication, click **Click here to Enable**.

**3. Scan the QR code**

Scan it with your authenticator app, then enter the 6-digit code it shows.

**4. Save your backup code**

You'll be shown a backup code. Store it somewhere safe (not on the same phone). You'll need it if you lose your device.

## Lost your phone?

Use your backup code to log in, then disable and re-enable 2FA with your new device. If you've lost the backup code too, [contact support](/support/open-a-ticket). We'll ask you to verify your identity before removing 2FA.
