# Restore and download backups

> Restore files, databases or email from HostCloud's daily backups, or download your own copy.

HostCloud backs up shared and WordPress hosting accounts every day. This guide shows you how to restore something from those backups yourself, and how to download your own copy for safekeeping.

## HostCloud's daily backups

| Restoring | Free. Do it yourself in cPanel, or ask us |

## Restore from a daily backup

You can restore your website files, databases or email yourself with **Backuply** in cPanel.

**1. Log in to cPanel**

See [Log in to cPanel](/cpanel/log-in-to-cpanel.md).

**2. Open Backuply**

Type **Backuply** in the **Search Tools** box at the top of cPanel and open it. You'll find it in the **Software** section too.

**3. Choose a backup**

Find the backup from the date you want to go back to.

**4. Choose what to restore and start**

Choose what to restore, such as your website files, databases or email, and start the restore. It runs in the background, and large restores can take a while.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Restoring replaces your current files, database or emails with the older copy. Anything added or changed since that backup will be lost. If you're unsure, download your own backup first (see below).

> [!TIP]
>
> Prefer us to do it? [Open a Technical Support ticket](/support/open-a-ticket.md). Tell us what to restore (for example, the website files, a database name or an email address) and the date to restore from. It's free.

## Download your own backup

Keeping your own copy away from HostCloud protects you if something goes wrong, and is useful before big changes such as a theme or plugin update.

**1. Open Backup**

In cPanel, type **Backup** in the **Search Tools** box and open **Backup**. If you'd like to be guided step by step, open **Backup Wizard** instead.

**2. Choose what to download**

* **Full account backup:** everything in your account in one file. Best for keeping an archive.
* **Partial backups:** just your home directory (website files), a single database, or your email settings. Easier to restore yourself.

**3. Save the file**

Download the file and keep it somewhere safe, such as your computer and a cloud storage service.

> [!NOTE]
>
> A full account backup can't be restored from inside cPanel. To restore one, [open a ticket](/support/open-a-ticket.md). Partial backups (files and databases) can be restored with the same **Backup** tool.

## Using a VPS?

These daily backups are for shared and WordPress hosting. On a VPS, you're responsible for your own backups. You can add the **Automated Backup** add-on from your VPS's **Addons** page in the Client Area. See [Support hours and what we cover](/support/support-scope-and-hours.md).

Still stuck? [Open a ticket](/support/open-a-ticket.md) and tell us what you need to restore.
