# Find where to edit your DNS

> Work out whether to change DNS records in cPanel or at another DNS provider.

DNS records control where your website and email go. You edit them wherever your domain's **nameservers** point. This guide helps you find the right place in a minute.

## Check your nameservers

In the Client Area, click **Domains** in the top menu. On the domain's row, click the **⋯** menu and choose **Manage Nameservers**.

* **Use default nameservers** is selected, or you see `ns1.mysecurecloudhost.com` to `ns4.mysecurecloudhost.com`: your domain uses HostCloud nameservers.
* Other nameservers are listed (for example, ones ending in `cloudflare.com`): your domain uses another DNS provider.

If your domain is registered somewhere else, check the nameservers in that provider's account.

## Where to make changes

| Your situation | Where to edit DNS |
| - | - |
| Domain uses HostCloud nameservers **and** you have HostCloud hosting | In cPanel, open **Zone Editor**. See [Add or edit DNS records](/dns/add-dns-records). |
| Domain uses Cloudflare or another DNS provider | In your DNS provider's dashboard. Changes made at HostCloud won't take effect. |
| Domain only, with no HostCloud hosting | See below. |

## Domain only, no hosting?

HostCloud nameservers only serve DNS for domains that have a HostCloud hosting account. If you have just a domain with us, choose one of these:

* **Add hosting**, then [point the domain to it](/dns/point-domain-to-hostcloud) and manage DNS in cPanel.
* **Use your own DNS provider** (such as Cloudflare). Set up your records there, then enter that provider's nameservers under **Use custom nameservers (enter below)**. See [Change your nameservers](/domains/change-nameservers).

## What about "DNS Management" in the Client Area?

You may see **DNS Management** in your domain's sidebar. Please don't use it. It doesn't work with HostCloud nameservers or with other DNS providers, so changes made there won't affect your website or email. Use cPanel or your DNS provider instead, as shown above.

Still stuck? [Open a ticket](/support/open-a-ticket) with your domain name and tell us what you're trying to set up.
