# .in domain rules

> What's different about .in and .co.in domains, and the rules you need to follow.

A `.in` domain shows that your business is Indian. `.in` domains are run by the .IN Registry, and come with a few rules that differ from extensions like `.com`. This guide explains them.

## Types of .in domain

| Extension | Typically used by |
| - | - |
| `.in` | Anyone. The most popular choice |
| `.co.in` | Businesses and companies |
| `.net.in` | Internet and network providers |
| `.org.in` | Non-profit organisations |
| `.firm.in` | Firms and partnerships |
| `.gen.in` | General use |
| `.ind.in` | Individuals |

## Rules to know

> **Your contact details must be accurate**
>
> The registrant (owner) details must be real and up to date. The registry can suspend a `.in` domain with false or incomplete details. Check them under **Contact Information** in the domain's sidebar.

> **No privacy protection**
>
> Privacy protection isn't allowed for `.in` domains. See [Protect your domain with registrar lock and privacy](/domains/domain-lock-and-privacy.md).

> **Registration length**
>
> You can register or renew a `.in` domain for 1 to 10 years at a time.

> **Transfers**
>
> A `.in` domain can't be transferred within 60 days of registration or a previous transfer, and must be unlocked and not expired. Every transfer to HostCloud adds 1 year to the registration. See [Transfer a domain to HostCloud](/domains/transfer-a-domain-to-hostcloud.md).

> **Fewer options in the Client Area**
>
> Some `.in` extensions, such as `.co.in`, don't show **Addons** or **Get EPP Code** in the domain's sidebar. If you need the transfer code, see [Get your domain's EPP code](/domains/get-an-epp-code.md).

> **Expiry**
>
> Like other domains, an expired `.in` domain stops working, and renewing late costs extra. See [What happens when a domain expires](/domains/expiry-grace-and-redemption.md).

> Got `yourbusiness.in`? Consider registering `yourbusiness.co.in` and `yourbusiness.com` too, so nobody else can take them.
