# Email settings: IMAP, POP3 and SMTP

> The server names, ports and login details to set up HostCloud email in any app.

Use these settings to add your HostCloud email address to any email app, such as Outlook, Apple Mail or the Gmail app. Replace `yourdomain.com` with your own domain.

## Find your exact settings in cPanel

cPanel shows the settings for each email account, and can set up some apps for you automatically.

**1. Open Email Accounts**

Log in to cPanel, type **Email Accounts** in the **Search Tools** box at the top, and open it.

**2. Open the mail client settings**

Next to the email account, click **Connect Devices**. The **Set Up Mail Client** page opens.

**3. Use automatic setup, or copy the settings**

* **Mail Client Automatic Configuration Scripts:** download a setup file for your app. Available for iOS and macOS Mail, Mozilla Thunderbird, KDE Kmail, Mail for Windows 10, Microsoft Outlook 2007 and 2010 for Windows, and Windows Live Mail. For iPhone and Mac, choose **IMAP over SSL/TLS**.
* **Mail Client Manual Settings:** copy the values from the **Secure SSL/TLS Settings (Recommended)** box. They match the table below.
* **Email Instructions:** enter an email address and click **Send** to email these settings to yourself or a colleague.

## Secure SSL/TLS settings (recommended)

| Setting | Value |
| - | - |
| Username | Your full email address, for example `you@yourdomain.com` |
| Password | The password for that email account |
| Incoming server | `mail.yourdomain.com` |
| IMAP port | `993` |
| POP3 port | `995` |
| Outgoing (SMTP) server | `mail.yourdomain.com` |
| SMTP port | `465` |
| Security | SSL/TLS, for both incoming and outgoing |
| Authentication | Required for incoming and outgoing. Use the same username and password |

## Non-SSL settings (not recommended)

cPanel also lists settings without SSL/TLS. Use them only if your app can't connect with the secure settings, because your password and emails are not encrypted.

| Setting | Value |
| - | - |
| Incoming server | `mail.yourdomain.com`, IMAP port `143`, POP3 port `110` |
| Outgoing (SMTP) server | `mail.yourdomain.com`, SMTP port `587` |
| Authentication | Required for IMAP, POP3 and SMTP |

> [!NOTE]
>
> In some apps, outgoing authentication is a separate setting, such as "My outgoing server requires authentication". Turn it on, or your app won't be able to send email.

## IMAP or POP3?

| | IMAP (recommended) | POP3 |
| - | - | - |
| How it works | Your email stays on the server and syncs to every device | Email is downloaded to one device |
| Best for | Using email on your phone **and** computer | One computer only |
| Read and deleted emails | Match on all your devices | Can differ between devices |

Choose **IMAP** unless you have a reason to use POP3.

> [!WARNING]
>
> With POP3, emails may be removed from the server once they're downloaded. If that device is lost or damaged, those emails may be gone. Keep your own backups if you use POP3.

## Common problems

> **The app says my password is wrong**
>
> Check that the username is your **full** email address, not just the part before the @. If you've forgotten the password, reset it in cPanel under **Email Accounts**.

> **I can receive email but not send it**
>
> Check that the outgoing server is `mail.yourdomain.com`, the port is `465` with SSL/TLS, and outgoing authentication is turned on.

> **The app can't connect to the server**
>
> Check that your domain points to HostCloud. See [Point your domain to HostCloud](/dns/point-domain-to-hostcloud.md). If you've just changed your nameservers, wait for the change to finish. See [How long DNS changes take to work](/dns/dns-propagation.md).
