# Fix emails going to spam

> Stop your emails landing in your customers' spam folders, and stop spam reaching you.

If the emails you send end up in spam, it's usually because the receiving server can't confirm they really came from you. This guide shows you how to fix that, and how to filter spam you receive.

## Emails you send go to spam

### 1. Check SPF, DKIM and reverse DNS

These are DNS records that prove your emails are genuine:

| Record | What it does |
| - | - |
| **SPF** | Lists the servers allowed to send email for your domain |
| **DKIM** | Adds a digital signature to each email, so receivers can check it wasn't changed |
| **Reverse DNS (PTR)** | Links your mail server's IP address back to a name |

**1. Open Email Deliverability**

[Log in to cPanel](/cpanel/log-in-to-cpanel.md), type **Email Deliverability** in the **Search Tools** box and open it.

**2. Check your domain**

You'll see each of your domains with its status. If a domain shows a problem, click **Manage** next to it.

**3. Fix any problems**

If your domain uses HostCloud nameservers, use the **Repair** option to fix SPF or DKIM automatically. If your DNS is with Cloudflare or another provider, cPanel shows the exact records to add. Copy them into your DNS provider. See [Where to edit your DNS](/dns/where-to-edit-dns.md).

> [!NOTE]
>
> If you also send email through another service, such as Google Workspace or a newsletter tool, your SPF record must include it too. Ask that service for the value to add. You must have only **one** SPF record per domain.

### 2. Add a DMARC record

DMARC tells receiving servers what to do with emails that fail SPF or DKIM, and it's now expected by Gmail and Yahoo. Start with this `TXT` record, which only monitors and doesn't block anything:

| Type | Name | Value |
| - | - | - |
| TXT | `_dmarc.yourdomain.com` | `v=DMARC1; p=none;` |

See [Add or edit DNS records](/dns/add-dns-records.md).

### 3. Check your email content and habits

* Don't send bulk email (newsletters, promotions) from your normal mailbox. Use a dedicated newsletter service.
* Only email people who asked to hear from you, and include an unsubscribe link in marketing emails.
* Avoid subject lines in ALL CAPS, lots of exclamation marks, and messages that are only an image or a link.
* Make sure the "From" address is a real mailbox on your domain.

> [!WARNING]
>
> If an email account on your domain is hacked, it may be used to send spam, which harms delivery for every address on your domain. If you notice bounce messages you didn't send, change that account's password straight away and [open a ticket](/support/open-a-ticket.md).

## Track a missing email

To see whether an email you sent was delivered, open **Track Delivery** in cPanel. Search for the recipient's address to see what happened to recent messages.

## Too much spam coming in

**1. Open Spam Filters**

In cPanel, type **Spam Filters** in the **Search Tools** box and open it.

**2. Turn on spam filtering**

Turn on the spam filter. You can choose to move suspected spam to a spam folder automatically, rather than deleting it.

**3. Adjust if needed**

If real emails are being marked as spam, add the sender to the allow list (whitelist). If spam keeps getting through, add the sender to the block list (blacklist).

Still stuck? [Open a ticket](/support/open-a-ticket.md) with your domain name, and the headers of an email that went to spam if you can.
