# Change your VPS root password

> Set a new root password for your Linux VPS, or reset it if you've forgotten it.

Change the root password from your welcome email as soon as you first log in, and whenever someone who knew it no longer needs access. This guide shows two ways.

## If you can log in: use SSH

**1. Connect**

[Connect to your VPS with SSH](/vps/access-your-vps-over-ssh.md) as `root`.

**2. Set a new password**

Type this and press **Enter**:

```bash theme={null}
passwd
```

Type the new password twice. Nothing appears while you type. That's normal.

You'll see a message that the password was updated. Use the new password next time you connect.

## If you've forgotten it: reset it in the Client Area

**1. Open the server panel**

In the Client Area, click **Services** in the top menu (page: **My Products & Services**), then open your VPS.

**2. Reset the password**

On the **Overview** tab, under **Root Credentials**, leave the reset method as **Password (default)** and click **Reset Password**.

> [!TIP]
>
> Choose a long password (16 characters or more) that you don't use anywhere else, and keep it in a password manager. Better still, log in with an SSH key and turn off password logins. See [First steps to secure a new VPS](/vps/secure-a-new-vps.md).

Using a Windows VPS? See [Connect to your Windows VPS with Remote Desktop](/windows-vps/connect-with-remote-desktop.md) to reset the Administrator password.

Still stuck? [Open a ticket](/support/open-a-ticket.md) with your server's IP address.
