# Reset your WordPress admin password

> Get back into your WordPress dashboard if you've forgotten your password.

Locked out of your WordPress dashboard? This guide shows you how to reset your admin password, starting with the easiest way.

## Option 1: Use "Lost your password?"

**1. Open the login page**

Go to `https://yourdomain.com/wp-login.php`.

**2. Request a reset link**

Click **Lost your password?**, enter your WordPress username or email address, and click **Get New Password**.

**3. Set a new password**

Open the email from your website and follow the link to choose a new password.

No email after a few minutes? Check your spam folder. If it still doesn't arrive, your site may not be able to send email, or the admin email address may be out of date. Use option 2.

## Option 2: Reset it in phpMyAdmin

This works even if WordPress can't send email.

> [!WARNING]
>
> You'll be editing your site's database directly. Change only the one field described here. If you're unsure, take a backup first or [open a ticket](/support/open-a-ticket.md). See [Restore and download backups](/cpanel/take-and-restore-backups.md).

**1. Find your database name**

[Log in to cPanel](/cpanel/log-in-to-cpanel.md) and open **File Manager**. In your site's folder (usually `public_html`), open `wp-config.php` and note the value of `DB_NAME`. Note `$table_prefix` too. It's usually `wp_`.

**2. Open phpMyAdmin**

In cPanel, open **phpMyAdmin**. Click your database name in the list on the left.

**3. Open the users table**

Click the table ending in `users`, for example `wp_users`. Find your admin user and click **Edit**.

**4. Set a new password**

In the `user_pass` row, choose **MD5** in the **Function** column, type your new password in the **Value** column, and click **Go**.

Log in at `https://yourdomain.com/wp-login.php` with the new password. WordPress automatically upgrades it to its stronger storage format the first time you log in.

## After you're back in

* Check **Users** in WordPress for admin accounts you don't recognise. If you find any, your site may have been hacked. Delete them and [open a ticket](/support/open-a-ticket.md).
* Make sure **Settings → General → Administration Email Address** is an address you check.
* Use a strong, unique password, and consider a two-factor authentication plugin.

Still stuck? [Open a ticket](/support/open-a-ticket.md) with your domain name.
