Most websites, including WordPress, run on PHP. Some apps need a particular PHP version or higher limits. This guide shows you how to change both in cPanel.

Change the PHP version

1

Open Select PHP Version

Log in to cPanel, type Select PHP Version in the Search Tools box and open it.
2

Pick a version

Choose the version you need from the current PHP version list and apply it. The change takes effect straight away.
3

Test your site

Open your website and check that it works. If something breaks, switch back to the previous version.
Use the newest version your website supports. Newer versions are faster and get security fixes. Check your app’s or theme’s requirements before you change it.
The PHP version applies to your whole hosting account, including every site on it. Check all your sites after changing it.

Turn PHP extensions on or off

On the same page, open the Extensions tab. Tick an extension to turn it on, or untick it to turn it off. Only change these if your app’s instructions ask you to.

Change PHP settings

On the same page, open the Options tab. Common settings: Choose a new value from the list next to the setting. It saves automatically.
Settings can only be raised as far as your hosting plan allows. If your site keeps hitting a limit, check disk and resource usage, or open a ticket.
Still stuck? Open a ticket with your domain name and the PHP error message.
