Change the Administrator password from your welcome email after you first log in, and whenever someone who knew it no longer needs access. This guide shows you how.

If you can log in

1

Connect with Remote Desktop

Connect to your Windows VPS as Administrator.
2

Open the security screen

Inside the Remote Desktop window, press Ctrl + Alt + End. (Ctrl + Alt + Delete would go to your own computer instead.) On a Mac, use Fn + Ctrl + Option + Delete, or open the Start menu on the server, type osk and use the on-screen keyboard.
3

Change the password

Choose Change a password. Enter the current password, then the new one twice, and press Enter.
Use the new password the next time you connect. If you saved the old password in your Remote Desktop app, update it there too.
Prefer a command? Open Command Prompt as administrator on the server and run net user Administrator *. You’ll be asked to type the new password twice.

If you’ve forgotten it

1

Open the server panel

In the Client Area, click Services in the top menu (page: My Products & Services), then open your Windows VPS.
2

Reset the password

On the Overview tab, click Reset Windows Password.

Choose a strong password

Your server can be reached from anywhere on the internet, and Remote Desktop logins are a common target for attacks.
  • Use at least 16 characters, mixing words, numbers and symbols.
  • Don’t reuse a password from anywhere else.
  • Keep it in a password manager, not in a text file on your desktop.
Never share the Administrator login. If a developer needs access, create a separate Windows user for them, and remove it when their work is done.
Still stuck? Open a ticket with your server’s IP address.
