Change the root password from your welcome email as soon as you first log in, and whenever someone who knew it no longer needs access. This guide shows two ways.

If you can log in: use SSH

2

Set a new password

Type this and press Enter:
Type the new password twice. Nothing appears while you type. That’s normal.
You’ll see a message that the password was updated. Use the new password next time you connect.

If you’ve forgotten it: reset it in the Client Area

1

Open the server panel

In the Client Area, click Services in the top menu (page: My Products & Services), then open your VPS.
2

Reset the password

On the Overview tab, under Root Credentials, leave the reset method as Password (default) and click Reset Password.
Choose a long password (16 characters or more) that you don’t use anywhere else, and keep it in a password manager. Better still, log in with an SSH key and turn off password logins. See First steps to secure a new VPS.
Using a Windows VPS? See Connect to your Windows VPS with Remote Desktop to reset the Administrator password. Still stuck? Open a ticket with your server’s IP address.
